You may already know that vinegar makes a great all-purpose cleaner. But did you know that you can easily jazz up even that vinegar, with the result of an even more powerful, and nicer smelling, specialty cleaner.
It’s so simple to do!
Infused Cleaning Vinegar
- Infusion ingredients of choice
1. Start with a clean glass jar.
- Any glass jar with a well-fitting lid is fine.
2. Find something for the infusion.
- You might be surprised by what you already have in your kitchen that you can clean with.
- Citrus and pine make great cleaners with a fresh smell.
- Use up the dried-out garlic bulbs at the bottom of your refrigerator, that wilted basil, or old bay leaves are all natural insect repellents.
- Cloves and cinnamon sticks have both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.
3. Add vinegar.
- For old spices you can simply dump the rest of your cloves, say, into a glass jar and fill the rest with vinegar.
- For the citrus infusions simply put the peels in a glass jar as you use them and pour vinegar over to cover. When your jar is about halfway full of peels, fill the rest of the jar to the top with vinegar.
4. Let it all infuse. Now comes the patience.
- Put the jar somewhere out of the way and let it infuse until it’s changed color significantly. At least two weeks, but the longer you leave it the stronger the infusion will be.
5. Strain and bottle.
- Once the infusion has developed a nice rich colour, it can be strained into a fresh jar or spray bottle
- The peels and other organic matter can be composted or put down your garbage disposal for some bonus cleaning.
- To use this infused vinegar, I pour it into a spray bottle, it can be diluted by about a third. Now you have your all-purpose cleaner, and a great smelling mold preventative.
